To pre-germinate seeds is to give it a head start, a little bump in the right direction. This is my first-year pre-germinating seeds and I am super excited to give them a boost. I have ordered some crazy types of seeds this year so I want to make sure they all have a good beginning.

I don’t know about you, but seeds have always amazed me. This teeny, tiny little thing becoming this wonderfully productive, life-giving plant. I love looking at the different sizes and shapes of each different vegetable seed. The whole process of planting, growing, and saving seed is all very beautiful.
With that said, I used to hate waiting weeks for the little sprout to emerge. If you’re like me, you’re always wondering if you did it right, if you put too much water, if it didn’t get enough heat, etc. This method prevents all of that!

To pre-germinate seeds means to keep them hot and moist prior to planting them.

Why You Should Pre-Germinate Seeds

1. To Check for Duds
If you’ve ever had a pack of seeds lying around for years, you might want to check them before planting! If they pre-germinate they’re good to go, and if they don’t, throw them out. You’ll also be guaranteed successful seeds/seedlings.

2. Saves Time
When you put the seeds in a moist and warm condition prior to planting them it accelerates their germinate speed and can save several days once planted in the soil. You’ll also get your seedling faster!

3. Saves Space
Instead of planting all of your seeds in soil and having only some emerge, by pre-germinating your seeds you’re now only planting the good ones! So you can ensure your space is taken up by seeds that will grow healthy.
